The story behind the strings

Taylor Guitars worked with Elixir Strings on a special set of strings to give the Grand Concert and Grand Auditorium guitars more powerful treble and bass.

A must for a high-quality guitar is its ability to sound like one and the same instrument from the deepest to the highest pitch. From Bob Taylor’s point of view, Andy Powers has the natural instinct to realise this with a guitar, as the balanced character of the Grand Orchestra shows. The style and string strength of a guitar can play an important role in obtaining this.

At first it was the 800s, from Elixir Acoustics 80/20 bronze strings with NANOWEB® coating, which have been used for years, changed to Elixir acoustic phosphor bronze strings with NANOWEB® coating.

”The phosphor bronze strings give the trebles a silky, intense shine and a whole lot more fullness and warmth, ” he adds.

Andy and the rest of the product development team were so enthusiastic about them that they made the decision to mount phosphor bronze strings on all Taylor Western guitars in 2014.

Creating a balanced sound

One of the qualities that Bob Taylor admires in Andy’s approach is his ability to create a balanced tone throughout the guitar.

”The highest notes you can play on the high strings are as loud and full as the deepest ones, ” explains Bob.

”It sounds like a single guitar, from one end to the other. This can be difficult, the first five frets are like a guitar, the next four like another, and four frets like a third, but Andy’s guitars Sound like one and the same instrument, like a piano. ”
